What a 3-Motor Fully Electric Hi-Low Hospital Bed Really Is

A 3-motor fully electric bed uses one motor to raise the head, a second to raise the knees and feet, and a third to lift and lower the entire sleep deck. Every movement happens at the touch of a button, so nobody has to crank a handle at the foot of the bed.

That third motor is the one that changes daily life. It turns an ordinary adjustable bed into a hi-low bed, which is the single most requested feature by families caring for someone at home.

Semi-Electric vs. Fully Electric: Why the Third Motor Matters

A semi-electric bed powers the head and foot but leaves the height to a manual crank, and in real homes that crank rarely gets turned. A fully electric bed lets the person in bed, or the caregiver, change height in seconds.

Chapter 3

The Hi-Low Function: Why Getting In and Out of Bed Becomes Easy

The easiest, safest way to stand up is from a seat where your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees bend at about a right angle. A standard bed is fixed at one height; a hi-low bed can be set to exactly the right sitting height for each person.

Lower the bed to sit down, raise it slightly to stand up, and let the legs do less work. For many people this is the difference between needing help every morning and getting up on their own.

Chapter 4

The Low Position: Fall Protection and Safe Self-Transfers

At its lowest setting a hi-low bed brings the mattress close to the floor. If someone rolls out during the night, the distance to the floor is shorter, and transfers to a wheelchair or commode are more level.

The High Position: Why a Caregiver Wants the Bed Really High

Caregivers spend hours bending over a bed to bathe, dress, change linens, reposition, and help with meals. Raising the bed to waist height means they can stand upright while they work instead of stooping.

That protects the caregiver's back and shoulders, speeds up every routine, and makes one-person care realistic. A bed that rises high is as much for the person giving care as for the person receiving it.

Chapter 6

The 5-Function Bed Explained

A 5-function bed adds two tilting positions to the three standard functions of head, foot and hi-low. Those two extra positions are Trendelenburg and Reverse Trendelenburg, and they tilt the whole sleep surface as one piece.

The Supernal 5 and the Tuffcare T7036 and T7042 are true 5-function beds. The Ascend with Tilt offers full-bed tilt in a home-furniture design.

Chapter 7

Trendelenburg: Feet Above the Head

Trendelenburg tilts the entire bed so the feet sit higher than the head. Clinicians use it to encourage blood flow back toward the heart and to help with swelling in the legs.

It is also practical for caregivers, because a slight tilt helps slide a person back up toward the pillow without lifting them. Any therapeutic use should always follow the advice of the person's doctor.

Chapter 8

Reverse Trendelenburg: Head Above the Feet

Reverse Trendelenburg tilts the bed the other way, raising the head end above the feet while keeping the body in a straight line. Many people find it helps with acid reflux, breathing comfort, and sitting up without sliding down the mattress.

Because the body stays straight rather than folded at the hips, it is also a comfortable way for side and stomach sleepers to sleep with the head elevated.

Chapter 9

Cardiac Chair and Lawn Chair Positions

Combine head up, knees up, and a reverse tilt and the bed becomes a supported chair. This seated posture makes eating, reading, visiting with family, and watching television far more comfortable.

Chapter 10

Optional Side Rails: Half Rails, Full Rails and Rail Covers

Side rails are optional on every bed in this guide. Half rails at the head of the bed give a sturdy handhold for rolling over and sitting up, while still leaving an open path to stand.

Flex-A-Bed builds rail mounting plates into the frame at the factory, Transfer Master offers half rails with bamboo covers, Tuffcare offers half rails for its Century beds, and Dawn House and Ascend offer a support rail that moves with the bed.

Chapter 11

Using Rails Safely

Rails should be chosen for the person, not added by default. Use rails designed for the specific bed, keep gaps between the rail, mattress and headboard as small as possible, and use a mattress that fits the frame snugly.

Chapter 12

Head and Foot Articulation and Zero Gravity

Head and foot articulation lets you raise your back to read or breathe more easily and lift your knees to take pressure off the lower back. Many remotes include a one-touch zero gravity position that raises the legs slightly above the heart.

Supernal beds raise the head to 60 degrees and the foot to 35 degrees; Ergomotion's Ascend and Dawn House beds include programmable presets so a favorite position is a single press away.

Chapter 13

Tilt, European Head Tilt and Wall-Hugging Design

A European-style head tilt angles the pillow forward so you can read or watch television without stacking pillows. Wall-hugging frames slide the mattress back toward the wall as the head rises, so the nightstand stays within reach.

The Supernal 3 includes both a European head tilt and wall-hugging motion, and the Ascend adds full-bed tilt to its hi-low base.

Weight Capacity and Frame Construction

Always check the capacity of the frame against the person using it, with room to spare. Capacities in this guide range from 400 pounds for a single Flex-A-Bed Hi-Low or Supernal twin up to 600 pounds for the Tuffcare Century and 750 pounds on Ergomotion's bases.

Chapter 15

Choosing the Right Size

Hi-low beds are no longer limited to a narrow twin. Depending on the model you can choose twin, twin long, a wider 42-inch long-term care bed, full, queen, king or split king.

Split king lets couples keep sleeping side by side while each person controls their own half, and Flex-A-Bed even lets you pair a Hi-Low with a Premier or Value Flex.

Chapter 16

Remotes, Pendants, Voice and App Control

A good control is large, simple and readable in the dark. Choices include backlit wireless remotes, wired pendants that clip to the rail, voice control, and smartphone apps.

Dawn House adds voice commands and an app that tracks sleep, heart rate and respiration, while the Tuffcare Century uses an ergonomic 5-function pendant that is easy for caregivers to find.

Chapter 17

Battery Backup, Casters and Emergency Lowering

Patient Lifts, Wheelchairs and Transfer Equipment

If a patient lift is part of the care plan, check under-bed clearance before you buy. The Tuffcare Century leaves nine inches under its recessed frame, the Supernal 5 works with most patient lift systems, and Flex-A-Bed shows its Hi-Low in use with a Hoyer-style lift.
